Welcome to May '09 edition of ShowStars.Inc blog magazine.

We dedicate this site to the local(+65) Performing Arts. Mainly our aims are for the Hip Hop culture.

We’re into the Arts and Night life, so we’ll try to promote every kind of Performance and Performer that our small island has to offer.

We’re not professional Journalist or Photographers but we have passion of what we do and we want to support our local acts and performers in our non-profitable ways.

COMMANDING OFFICER

Arin Hirata who is also known as DJ Ruxta showed so much interest in music since he was a little boy. Often seen playing with the tape recorder at home. Never doubt that his passion for music grew tremendously over the years. Back in school, he loves to play the musical instruments, joins the school's Talentime and won quite a few Competitions. Then his passion to be a DJ started at the age of 17. He took his basic DJ skill from a well knowned DJ in Singapore, but was shut down due to his service for the nation. He regained his interest and joined E-tracX DJ Academy. From there, he started to do showcases from small gigs to big shows. His big break was when he showcased for Nike Joga Bonito held at Cineleisure Orchard , slotted from his mentor DJ Koflow. Not only he's active in being a Dj, he's also the event sound technician for 65Hope and an active member of a traditional javanese artform playing the Gamelan and Gendang. He opened the ShowStars.Inc blog and forum for artist in different genre to get together for their love of Arts in any views. Now he can be found to be guest-featured to spin in local clubs and to be part of projects with other local musicians. Exploring music in another way, in another level.

Mr Chan - Last Man Standing
Workingman Entertainment
Launch: 2008

The funny man of Triple Noize, Mr Chan or you may know him as 128Ram? Release his debut solo album “The Last Man Standing” early this year. Adding it up to the history book of SG HipHop along side with XS.1 Compilation and FYMPS. It’s quite an interesting album, good arrangements, featured artistes and Bonus Remixes. Tracks were produced by the Man himself for Workingman Entertainment, “Superheroes” were produced by Rauzan.XS for BrandNewFeeling and the album were mastered at Polydox Music and were distributed by Workingman Entertainment.

Thanks to the Man himself for the complimentary CD for the people of ShowStars.

Downside:
Some of the samples sounded from a 16bit keyboard. Where its not clipped but cracked during the rendering or mastering process.

1Asia HipHop Compilation
Powder Records
Launch: February 2008

1Asia has 4 ambassador of HipHop, and our very own Syaheed of Bedsty Music is one of them, and he's also in the compilation. Together with Koko, Taufiq Batisah and Too Phat. There are 15 tracks altogether, and every track should be discovered. Its very interesting to get all asian doing a HipHop compilation. From the commercial sounds of KL to the experimental sounds of China. There’s a track from Yin T’sang call “Understanding” which I don’t understand at all, but I really dig the whole arrangement. You get big names like Dj Nesh, Thaitanium, WordsManifest, Prosa, Yacko and many more. I’m really glad to have a copy of this album and really glad Asian unite through HipHop.

Downside:
Some of the track sound Britney Pop’ish. Other than that I got no complains.

Album Title: PeepShow

Peepshow! Why! We're abit dissapointed with the E.P, the sound quality is not what we imagine it to be. To have yourself blown away at their performance everytime, makes you want to bring it back home and experience it again. What dissapoint us is the distortion not properly leveled in the mix, We like it if the distortion feels raw and crisp, its a lil wet, we're not sure if its their creative way of doing or the producers kind of mix. Why is the vocal feels plain? Zaki shouted during performance bringing the raw feel. Its like his vocals is editted in the E.P.

Thankfully, the rest of the sounds are fine and the blend well with each other. Everyone's skills is clearly heard. The solos, the drums, the keys, not forgetting vocals.Play with more layers/efx to the vocal, why not add some ad-lips. Cause we imagine Zaki's voice to be mixed like Chris Martin(Cold Play). The producer should take good care with his voice in the mix. Every song brings energy and emotion. Tracks that are constantly playing on our Boom Box are actually all of it. The E.P is constantly in repeat mode. Our favourites are "Why", we imagine the music video of the song as if they are in captive by a beautiful crazy maiden, and they are asking why are they in a position their in.

Well its just an E.P for now, but in 2045, when you guys launch your album, we know it'll will be galaxy far more better than the E.P. Even with the flaws of the production, this E.P is a MUST HAVE! Album Title: Tokyo Hustle

Born in Singapore, 1982, but moved to Canada at a very young age. Now reciding in Toronto but still reprisents Singapore. In 2003, she began her own record label known as M1 Group and subsequently released her debut album Mississauga. Masia One became the first female rapper to be nominated for "Best Rap Video" in the MuchMusic Video Awards.

Thanks to Garuda (Golden Triangle Records), we have her Tokyo Hustle EP. Its one album you can't miss. especially for the ladies who's young at heart. If you like dark, soulful, sexy, women in charge kinda attitude. Then this album is for you. First thing in my mind when i'm listening to this album, Sexy, pure sexy. Combined with dark experimental sound and wonky jungle bassline but still in the Soul zone.

I dont really understand what or who her messages is for, but one fact, its by a lady for the ladies. The album goes best for girls night out, cruisin the streets pumping this out loud, feeling like a million dollars. There's a few song thats Jamaican influence, Jungle bassline. Netherlands producer, Nicolay did a very good job producing Telephone Love.

Tracks that have constant play in my playlist are New Love, Return of The B-Girl, and Grinder. Support your own home-girl.

Artiste: Freaky Z
Released: December 2007
Label: 65&Hope

Fymps is the revision to the previous album. This album brings out the character and sound of the Man himself. Not to mention a better album cover with pictures of new skul and ol’skul pictures with better sound and content.

Covering 20 tracks mainly under the F Word label. Balancing both the funny and "garang" content incorporated in this album. The pronounced sound of Freaky Z brings familiarities to his fans and local hiphop supporters.

Our personal favourite will be "Bass Man", "Saturday", "Rap Star" and "Aku Masih".

Overall we rate this album 8 out of 10.

Since this album defines HIM, probably next album will have a featured artiste or collaboration with other local acts (i.e. bands, R&B singers) and featuring the newest emcee/crew.

Though this album review is way overdue since his launching last year, ShowStars.Inc would like to congratulate Freaky Z on this album release and success through these years. We would like to wish you him all the best in whatever he sets his mind to, future marriage life, health, happiness and 65 & Hope.

Jazzy Jay Scratch Live Workshop

Thanks to Steph from E-TracX, for the invitation to the Rane/Serato Scratch Live workshop, conducted by Dj Jazzy Jay, which was held at Blowfish Entertainment.

I was very much excited when Steph text me that Dj Jazzy Jay is coming down to Singapore to do a workshop. Immediately I said yes of course. Jay is a legend, he’s the protégé of Africa Bambaataa as well as Kool Dj Red Alert which was also his cousin. He’s the youngest DJ for Universal Zulu Nation Dj at the age of 13. At 13, I don’t know what Dj’ing was. :D

I arrive early after E-TracX sets up the decks, watching Jay sound check makes me star struck. A Zulu Nation soldier right in-front of me. He’s humble and charming in person.

His companion was a Rane promoter named Dean. He introduces us the product of Rane and the new sexy SL3 which have its own independent aux in/out that produce 32bit audio wave that go well with Scratch Live version 1.90 up.

Me, KoFlow, Ritz, Shellsuit & Chad (Pushin-On Crew) were in the first few tables in front. *Cough *Geek. We’re so passionate about Scratch Live and when Jay started the workshop, we went silent, but the occasional tease to the lady sitting beside our table.

Jay started his workshop with a small routine, it was funky. The juggle from one track to another, the stab drop-ins, the fade out was all perfectly done. I believe he could go on forever if he wasn’t the one to host the workshop. The workshop is more of a refreshers for us, not that we’re boasting. ;)

Jay ended the workshop with a video routine, Serato Video-SL is a software plug-in for Scratch Live which adds the ability to playback and mix video files. Its hard to describe how he do his thing but it’s an experience I’ll never forget.

I, once again want to thank Steph from my E-TracX phamily. Thanks to the Legendary Dj Jazzy Jay for coming down to Singapore to do the workshop.
